Case Study: Creating a Portrait with Patterns
I'd like to show you how I make my portraits with custom patterns. Let's walk through the process using a portrait of Hinata from the girl group XG, which draws inspiration from their music video "TGIF." This piece showcases the pattern "Cosmic Gaze," which reflects their space-themed concept.
Step 1: Pattern Search
The process starts with either looking through patterns I've already made or designing a new pattern based on the concept. For this project, I created a colorful playful galaxy pattern. This pattern took its cues from the space-themed concept that XG uses in their performances.
Step 2: Reference Search & Sketch
I look up reference images of Hinata and start a rough sketch of her pose and face. Then I make a clean final sketch to work from making sure all the details are right before moving to the next step.
Step 3: Blocking Out Larger Shapes
Next, I block out the larger shapes, focusing on the overall structure and proportions. This helps keep the portrait balanced and well-composed. I also add colors from the “Cosmic Gaze” pattern, which is the color palette of the entire portrait.
Step 4: Shading & Forming Key Features
I create flat illustrations where I highlight and shade key features like the eyes, nose, and lips. The shading gives depth and dimension to the face. I keep the hair and overall portrait environment flat. To capture Hinata's likeness, I pay attention to her expression and any facial details I want to emphasize, while still keeping minimal shading and an overall flat illustration.
Step 5: The Final
The last step involves putting in highlights and the "Cosmic Gaze" pattern. I integrate the pattern into the portrait's background and Hinata's space suit. I pick out some "Cosmic Gaze" motifs and let them float around Hinata's portrait to add the finishing touches.
By breaking each step down, I aim to show how you can use patterns in portrait art to create engaging, themed pieces. The portrait of Hinata showcases one of many ways I bring patterns into my designs.
My overall style features playful sophisticated portraits with bold colorful patterns. Take a look at my portfolio to see more examples.
