  • Assists the Creative Process Moodboards are your point of reference for your original concept. They support design choices, cohesion, and, as mentioned before, improve communication.

Putting Together Your Mood Board

  1. Gather Inspiration Start by compiling images, textures, and colors that inspire you.

Look through magazines, books, online, your previous work, or photos of inspiration you gathered on the go.

  2. Arrange Elements This is where you can experiment with how to best set up your mood boards or place elements on a page. You can decide if, for larger projects, you utilize multiple mood boards.

For instance, if you were working on a project that utilizes both illustration and lettering, you might have a main mood board for the aesthetic and a second for typography that would inspire the lettering portion.

You can also consider structuring your moodboard sequentially, dividing elements based on color schemes, texts, and type.

  3. Is it Digital or Analog? Decide whether you would like to have a digital or physical mood board. Programs such as Pinterest, Adobe Spark, Adobe InDesign, and Affinity Publisher can create digital mood boards. You can create physical mood boards using printed images from magazines, postcards from your recent holiday, print and texture swatches, and various materials.
