Boost Your Confidence as a Surface Pattern Designer

As a surface pattern designer, your creativity is your strongest tool. But even the best artists can sometimes have a dip in confidence. Regardless of your experience in the field, self-doubt can erode your artistic growth. In this blog post, I am going to share five tips for surface pattern designers that will boost their creative confidence.

Tip 1. Embrace Mistakes

Perfectionism can stifle creativity. Mistakes can sometimes be a beneficial thing and even result in some unexpected outcomes in your final pieces. Embracing mistakes also helps you create more freely, but if it is a consistent mistake you want to change, go for it. Take a course, pick up a book, and see if you can study to improve.

Tip 2. Find a Supportive Community

You can participate in online discussion boards, meet people around your area, or take part in social media challenges that connect to surface pattern design. By sharing your work and getting constructive feedback from others, you can develop and feel more confident in your abilities.

3. Keep a Success Journal

Jot down successes, no matter how minor these may seem. Have you finally mastered that challenging technique? A client raved about your work? Write it down! If you're having a difficult day, revisit this journal to remind yourself where you've come from, your successes, and small wins.

4. Practice Regularly

Consistency is crucial in building both skills and confidence. Make time each day to work on your craft—even if it's just for 15-30 minutes a day. Regular practice will not only develop your technical skills but also enhance your artistic voice, which is very empowering and can bring confidence.

5. Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

Challenge yourself every now and then to learn new techniques, styles, or subject matter. It may feel awkward at first, but it challenges your skills and proves you can grow. Start small: try a new color palette or a different repeating pattern technique.
